Ooooo... Spooky!
I never used to be much of a lyrics listener. I do now, and I judge a song more on what it's saying rather than the music but there are still times when I'll appreciate a song for its beat than its message.
One thing I've never done though, is go back on old songs and think about what they're saying, but I did with one song last night and since I did it, I've been a little
and
at it's message.
Does anyone remember the group Bucks Fizz? For the uninformed, they won one of the Eurovision comps in the early 80's and they were pretty much touted as the new ABBA. There were the pretty girls, the perfectly coiffed men and the cutesy costumes that kids wanted to wear and the men secretly lusted for and they had the cutesy songs with the catchy tune that had us all singing along with them.
Or were they cutesy songs?
Last night, I got to thinking about their song Land of Make Believe (don't ask) and it wasn't till I thought about the lyrics and I pulled them up that I found out something much more sinister.
Here are the lyrics:
Stars in your eyes, little one
Where do you go to dream
To a place, we all know
The land of make believe
Shadows, tapping at your window
Ghostly voices whisper will you come and play
Not for all the tea in China
Or the corn in Carolina
Never, never ever
They're running after you babe
Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Something nasty in your garden's waiting
Patiently, till it can have your heart
Try to go but it won't let you
Don't you know it's out to get you running
Keep on running
They're running after you babe
Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Your world is turning
From night to day
Your dream is burning far, far away
Into the blue
You and I
To the circus in the sky
Captain Kids
On the sand
With the treasure close at hand
In the land of make believe
In the land of make believe
Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
I've got a friend who comes to tea
And no-one else can see but me
He came today
But had to go
To visit you
You never know
Okay... in case you missed it...
Something nasty in your garden's waiting
Patiently, till it can have your heart
Try to go but it won't let you
Don't you know it's out to get you running
Keep on running
They're running after you babe
What. The. Fuck...

That sounds more like something from Children of the Corn. (which I didn't even see, cuz I don't like scary movies, but it just sounds like it, yanno?)
